A method is claimed for the fabrication of a tubular metal envelope, comprising the following stages:- (a) providing a metal ribbon coated on at least one of its faces with a layer of another material, such as a synthetic material; (b) progressively shaping the ribbon by folding the longitudinal edges in order to form a closed tubular envelope in which the layer of synthetic material is directed towards the inside and in which one of the longitudinal edges overlaps in part the other longitudinal edge; and (c) fastening the assembled longitudinal edges by means of a laser beam welding device. The tubular metal envelopes, notably from copper, aluminium, steel and their alloys, coated with a synthetic material are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is used for the fabrication of tubular metal envelopes and more partic. for the fabrication of a flexible tubular envelope to produce cables for carrying electrical or optical signals or discharge hoses. It is a simple, efficient and economic method for their prodn. overcoming problems associated with conventional methods for the fabrication of flexible metal envelopes, thus extending the range of applications by reducing the cost of adequate fabrication.
