Gelled alcohol fuel contains a thickener and a suspended and/or dissolved flame colouring agent. The thickener is hydroxypropylcellulose (typical level of 0.01-1.999%) and is used in a lower alcohol (e.g. 1-5C alcohols esp. methanol and/or ethanol). Colouring agent can include metal and metalloid molecules and ions (e.g. B, Sb, Li, Sr, Ca). Compsn. can contain hydrocarbons and cosolvents as well as other materials such as antioxidants, perfumes, insecticidal (anti-mosquito) agents and buffers. Typical Brookfield viscosity is 5-12 mPas at 25 deg.C. Various preparatory methods involving heating or heat generated by dissolution and/or stirring are referred to and can include multi-step gelation with intermediate additions. ADVANTAGE - Relatively low levels of thickener and colouring agent are needed so that the product is cheaper and it and its combustion products are less toxic. Systems using insoluble colouring agents (e.g. LiOH in ethanol) can also be used.
