A process for extracting highly volatile contaminants from gas-permeable material, especially the ground (1), preferably in the region of building excavations (2), spoil dumps, piles of contaminated earth (1), loose materials or the like, is characterised by the following steps: first of all, at least one defined flow path (4) for gas inside or beneath the gas-permeable material is provided. Then the flow path (4) is connected to a downstream extraction device (5). Suction is then applied to the flow path (4) to generate at least a slight underpressure in it and a resultant flow of air/gas through the gaspermeable material towards the flow path (4). The extracted gas is then drawn further through or to a gas purification plant (6) which is located in front of, inside or behind the extraction device (5). In addition, a corresponding device is described.
