New sulphonated 2,2'-bis (diphenyl phosphinomethyl)- 1,1'-dinaphthyls are of formula (I), where Ar = m-C6H4SO3M; M = H, ammonium, a monovalent metal or the equiv. of a polyvalent metal; Ph = phenyl; m = 1 or 2; and n = 0, 1 or 2. (I) are prepd. by (a) sulphonating 2,2'-bis (diphenyl) phosphinomethyl)- 1,1'-dinaphthyl (II) at 0-25, pref. 0-10 deg. C.with oleum, pref. contg. 10-65 esp. 40-65% free SO3 and in an amt. of 25-80, esp. 40-70 mole SO3/mole (II); (b) hydrolsying the sulphonation mixt., pref. at upto 30, esp. 15-25 deg.C. and (c) isolating (I) from the mixt.; pref. by (c-1) neutralising with alkali carbonate or hydroxide, sepg. alkali sulphate, evapg. the aq. soln. to dryness and extracting (I) from the residue with a mixt. of 1-5C alcohol and water; or (c-2) reacting with a mixt. of water-insol. amine and organic solvent, esp. triisooctylamine and toluene, extracting the sulphate as amine salt and treating the amine salt soln. with an aq. soln. of a base, pref. NaOH or KOH. (III) contains 1-130, pref. 1-25, esp. 1-10 mole (I)/mol Rh. Hydroformylation is carried out with CO and H2 at 20-150, pref. 80-140, esp. 00-125 deg.C. and 0.1-30, pref. 1-12, esp. 3-7 MPa in the presence of (I) as water-soluble diphosphine in Rh complex cpds. as catalyst, pref. using an aq. (III) soln. with a Rh concn. of 20-1000, pref. 100-600, esp. 200-400 ppm. w.r.t. the soln..
