The device (1) dispenses newspapers one by one from a pile of newspapers (5) to be recognised and rejects counted. Each newspaper carries a code (7) of coloured points indicating the day of the year and a code of black points indicating the local edition. The newspapers are carried along a belt so that they are presented under the camera (6) one by one. A computer (8), linked to the camera, verifies the codes read by it and controls the movement of newspapers bearing valid codes to a receptacle (12). It also rejects newspapers with non-valid codes and counts them. ADVANTAGE - Enables count to be quickly made of number of newspapers not sold and returned to wholesalers.
