PRODUCTION OF @(3754/24)METH)ACRYLIC ACID ESTERS

PURPOSE:To simplify the purification and readily obtain a (meth)acrylic acid ester by carrying out the esterification reaction of (meth)acrylic acids with alcohols in the presence of a water-soluble polymerization inhibitor and a water- soluble esterifying catalyst, then washing the reactional product with water and removing the polymerization inhibitor and the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The dehydrating esterification reaction of (C1) (meth)acrylic acid with (D) alcohols (e.g. butyl alcohol) or the transesterification reaction of (C2) (meth)acrylic acid esters (e.g. methyl methacrylate) with (D) the alcohols is carried out in the presence of (A) a water-soluble polymerization inhibitor (e.g. potassium hydroquinone-2-sulfonate) and (B) a water-soluble esterifying catalyst (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid) and the polymerization inhibitor and the esterifying catalyst are then removed by washing with water to remarkably simplify and reduce the scale of the purification step. Thereby, the objective (meth)acrylic acid esters are obtained without requiring the neutralizing washing with a large amount of an alkali or an acid and the subsequent washing with water.
