The emission of ammonia and odours from a poultry shed or other animal accommodation can be greatly reduced by the animals being kept on a concrete shed floor having slotted openings, on which a layer of litter is arranged, and by then passing air through the slotted openings from a chamber underneath the shed floor to dry the litter layer. The shed floor can be composed of concrete beams having enlarged ends, which lie against one another so that the slotted openings are left clear. The said openings can be covered with perforated strips seated in recesses of the beams. Moreover, a coating layer of a special coating paint can be applied across the floor. The air to be passed through the slotted openings can be supplied by at least one fan, while at least one heat exchange installation can be present to heat or cool the air to be supplied. The space under the said shed floor may furthermore additionally contain at least one heating element.
