PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust luminance, without depending on use environment by detecting a pixel part with large luminance difference, modulating and controlling light intensity of incident light so that there would not be luminance difference, using a dichroic GH liquid crystal. SOLUTION: In an imaging apparatus, a discrimination part 37 discriminates whether there is a pixel with luminance exceeding the number of quantization bits of image compression processing in the case of luminance detection in an automatic focusing operation; when it is determined that there is the pixel with the luminance exceeding the number of quantization bits by the discrimination part 37; a transmission decreasing part 38 corresponding to bit exceeding the luminance decreases transmission of an electrical light modulation element 5, corresponding to the pixel with the luminance exceeding the number of quantization bits, by performing element drive S2 so that the transmission factor lies within the number of quantization bits.
