[Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A cooling-element for a shaft furnace consists of a steel pipe or pipes positioned in a block of aluminium or an alloy thereof. The element shown, which is more particularly adapted for use in the cooling system described in Specification 471,973, comprises a U- shaped block 7 cast around two separate pipes 5, 6, positioned one behind the other, the arrangement allowing the rear pipe 5 to be brought into operation after the front pipe has burnt through. In the cooling system described in the above-mentioned Specification, auxiliary elements, preferably of less depth than the main elements may be arranged horizontally between adjacent members of a vertical series. or horizontally, vertically, or at an angle between adjacent vertical series. According to the second Provisional Specification high sulphur or white cast iron, or any other metal not subject to growth or granular change in contact with blast furnace gases or the charge, may be used as the casting-metal. |
