[Class 7 (iii)] A rich mixture is delivered into a cupshaped member disposed in a final mixing chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, a valve 5 is operated. by the throttle valve 1 and regulates the supply of fuel through passages 28, 12 to a chamber 11 where it is mixed with heated air drawn through a pipe 8 from a chamber 9 in the exhaust pipe 9a. The rich mixture is delivered through a pipe 16, which passes through the exhaust pipe, into a cup 19a, containing porcelain tubes 19b coated with a catalyst such as platinum or platinum sponge, and enters an enlarged part of the mixing chamber 19 through the gap between the lower edge of a cup 19a and a plate 19d. The main air supply enters the mixing chamber past a suction-actuated valve 2 having apertures 2a that admit air for idling and a piston 22 operating in a cylinder 21 which communicates with the atmosphere through a port 21a. To facilitate mixing, a plate 19c is provided on the top of the cup 19a. During engine braking, the fuel feed may be cut off by a valve 32 operated by a lever 31 and the engine supplied with air only. Steam alone or mixed with air may be admitted to the pipe 16 adjacent the cup 19b when the engine is running above idling speed. In a modified construction, Fig. 6, in which the rich mixture is unheated during idling, fuel is supplied through a tube 12b to a chamber 11a where it is mixed with heated air drawn through a pipe 8a from a chamber 9b in the exhaust pipe. The rich mixture is delivered through a pipe 42 which discharges adjacent the throttle valve 1. The air inlet valve 2 is prevented from seating during idling by a screw in the bottom of the cylinder 21, and the air delivered to the valve 2 is controlled by a rotatable ring. |
