[Class 4] A plate or deflector 26 is located in a slot formed between an aircraft wing 10 and an auxiliary aerofoil pivoted thereto and is arranged so that its leading edge projects at all times into the slot. In one form, a slot forming an aeileron or wing flap 14 carries a guide vane 26 which may be of aerofoil cross-section. The aileron is operated by an hydraulic-jack 30. A flap 22 which can close the slot is independently operated by an hydraulic-jack 38. In a modification the auxiliary flap 26<1> is operated by rotation of a disc 60. Discs 60 on opposite sides of the machine are operated by rotation of hand-wheel 72 through mutilated gears 68, 76, 76<1> arranged so that only one flap is operated at a time. The flap 14 may be grooved so as not to hinder movement of the flap 26'. In further modifications the flap 22 is arranged to be fully open during the initial 12‹ of movement of the flap 14. In these cases the control mechanism for the flap 22 is operated with lost motion from the mechanism for operating the flap 14 and may include spring- actuated toggle mechanism, mutilated gearing or cam mechanism. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also pivoted closure-flaps at the upper ends of the slots actuated to effect lateral control of the aircraft. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
