Gelatine photographic layers are hardened by means of ketones containing one or more oxy halogen groups but no aldehyde group. Suitable compounds are dioxyacetone, fructose, p-oxybenzoyl carbinol, and mono- and di-chloracetone. The hardening agent may be incorporated in the gelatine solution or in the emulsion, or the cast layer or the finished developed layer may be treated with a solution of the hardening agent. In examples: (1) a gelatine solution is mixed with an aqueous solution of dioxyacetone; (2) an aqueous silver halide emulsion containing gelatine is mixed with fructose; (3) an emulsion or gelatine layer is soaked in a solution of dioxyacetone at pH7.
