During operation of high-pressure discharge lamps, flickering occurs and a drop in the lamp voltage occurs when electrode points are formed excessively. The invention contributes to prevention of these effects. According to the invention, when the lamps are being operated with square-wave current, commutation processes are suppressed, thus resulting in the melting of the electrode points.
