A composition for preventing or treating periodontal diseases, which contains a saponin from ginseng or red ginseng is provided to have anti-inflammatory effect and antioxidative effect. A composition for preventing or treating periodontal diseases comprises a saponin as an active ingredient. The saponin is contained in a ginseng or red ginseng extract and is a ginsenoside]-Rg1, -Re, -Rf, -Rh1, -Rg2, -Rb1, -Rc, -Rb2, -Rd, -Rg3 or -Rh2. The saponin is an enriched protopanaxadiol saponin. The composition has treating effect of periodontal diseases and a composition for toothpaste, or oral cavity protection.
