The invention is directed towards a composite membrane comprising an ionic branch polymer and at least one other polymer, to form a polymer blend. The branch polymer is an ionic polymer and typically is selected from dendrimers, arborols, polycations, polyanions and polyamphiphiles, including in certain instances polethylenimine (PEI) or dextransulfate. The other polymer is typically nitrocellulose. Such membranes of the invention may be further comprised of one or more organic solvents and one or more surfactants.
