The engine has a main shaft (1) and a crankshaft (2) that are supported by two bearing plates (4). The shafts are engaged with each other over transmission units (1'-3') e.g. gear wheels or duplex chains, that are provided at the shafts. The crankshaft is connected with a cylinder head unit (8) by defining compression ratios. Positions of the crankshaft and the bearing plates are changeable in degrees of freedom using an adjusting device (10) to change compression ratios of the engine and to influence the compression ratios by changing the position of the crankshaft and the bearing plates.
