[Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Change-speed gearing 24 and transfer gearing 42 are mounted in a housing 1 and a wheeldriving shaft 47 also mounted in the housing is driven by the transfer gearing and slopes downwardly towards the driven wheel or wheels. In the construction shown the housing 1 comprises a compartment 3 enclosing an ordinary four-speed gearing 24, a compartment 4 enclosing the transfer gear 42 which is also an auxiliary two-speed gear and a housing cover 12 carrying the shaft 47 driving the front wheels through a spring-loaded slipping clutch 49, 50 which equalizes the drive between the front and rear wheels. The rear wheels are driven through a shaft gear 32 and a universal joint 34 of a propeller shaft (not shown) substantially in line with the main drive shaft. The housing 1 is divided into the compartments 3, 4 by a middle wall 2 and the bores for the different shafts can all be bored at one operation. The rear wheels are driven from the main shaft 17 of the main change-speed gear either through the low speed 19, 42 and 44, 32, as shown, or direct when the gear 19 is slid to engage the gear 32. The front wheels are driven from the shaft 17 through the angle gears 43, 48 and either of the gear pairs 19, 42 or 32, 44. The manner in which the gearing is assembled is described, the shaft 17 with its central bearing 14, gear 19 and subsidiary bearing 20 being inserted from the right through the bore 7 in the end wall of the housing, the central bearing being secured in the mid wall 2 by a screw 22. End play of the shaft 17 in the bearing 14 is prevented by snap rings 16, 18. The shaft gear 32 with its bearings 28, 30 and housing 27 is inserted in the bore 7 and secured by screws 38.
