PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of improving a pumping loss. SOLUTION: This 4-cycle internal combustion engine is provided with a variable valve train 31 capable of increasing or decreasing an internal EGR by changing an overlapping period, during which an intake opening/closing valve 8 and an exhaust opening/closing valve 9 are simultaneously opened. An intake control valve 20 is provided near a connection opening to a surge tank 17 of a main intake passage 16, and a downstream end of a sub-intake passage 34 is connected to the intake passage 16, and an upstream end is connected to the surge tank 17.
