The invention relates to the production of boxes having a variable volume adapted to the height of the products (4) contained therein, in which: the box (3) is cut along the vertical edges thereof, bend lines are formed at a suitable height on the sides (12) of the box in order to define upper flaps, and said flaps are folded down above the contents of the pre-filled box. At least one inflated or inflatable dunnage bag (16) is placed in the box (3) around and/or above the packaged products (4) after the bend lines have been formed, but before the flaps have been folded down above the contents. The bag (16) is inflated or deflated in order to fit the free space around and/or above the products (4). The invention also relates to a combined machine which cuts each box, marks and prepares same, inserts dunnage bags and closes each box.
