The device (1) has a safety belt (2) supported at a vehicle body (4) over an upper belt rotating point (3), and a reversible belt tightener (9) for applying a traction force to the safety belt. A measuring device (11) measures the forces at the safety belt, and a controller (12) is connected with the measuring device and the belt retractor. The controller is arranged such that the controller operates the belt tightener for applying the traction force in dependence of the forces measured with the measuring device. An independent claim is also included for a procedure for reducing wind-induced movements of a seat belt in a motor vehicle.
