PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a lamp voltage from falling into a low voltage state frequently or over a long time, and sufficiently prevent occurrence of flicker especially at the initial stage of lighting. SOLUTION: In an AC current of a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device 1, a current of a first low frequency which is lower than a regular frequency, and selected from a range of 20 [Hz] or more and 200 [Hz] or less, and the current of a second low frequency which is lower than the first low frequency and selected from the range of 5 [Hz] or more and 150 [Hz] or less are inserted into the current of the regular frequency selected from a prescribed range. In the current of the first low frequency, the amount to be inserted per one time is in a range of a half cycle or more and within five cycles, and its insertion interval is in a range of 0.01 [s] or more and 120 [s] or less. In the current of the second low frequency, the amount to be inserted per one time is in a range of a half cycle or more and within fifty cycles, and its insertion interval is in a range of 130 [s] or more and 300 [s] or less.
