PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner and its operating method, preventing reduction of recovery power and deterioration of performance even when an expander is bypassed in an air conditioner recovering compressor power by an expander. SOLUTION: In the air conditioner, a compression bypass passage having a compression bypass valve is provided between an outlet of a main compressor and a compression chamber positioned in the middle of a compression process in the main compressor. An opening of the compression bypass valve is changed on the basis of a discharge temperature or a degree of superheat of a merging part of the main compressor and a sub compressor so as to adjust a flow rate passing through the sub compressor with a compression bypass valve and to adjust a high pressure side pressure.
