PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silica sol wherein spherical silica fine particles having wart-like projections at their surfaces are dispersed in a solvent, in particular, a silica sol wherein spherical silica fine particles containing low levels of sodium, carbon, etc. are dispersed in a solvent, and a manufacturing method of the silica sol. SOLUTION: The silica sol comprises the solvent in which the spherical silica fine particles having a plurality of wart-like projections at their surfaces are dispersed. The silica sol has a surface roughness (SA1)/(SA2) of within the range of 1.9-5.0 and an average particle size (D2) of within the range of 10-150 nm, provided that (D2) is an average particle size (D2) of the silica fine particles determined by an image analysis method, (SA1) is a specific surface area of the spherical silica fine particles determined by the BET method, and (SA2) is a specific surface area calculated from (D2). The silica sol has a sodium content of≤100 mass ppm and a carbon content of within the range of 0.1-5 mass%. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
