The controller controls a piston of a piston pump (20) by varying stroke length such that the piston achieves a target position or a movement direction associated to a preset target time period, where the stroke is implemented by the piston. The target time period is a target time period for injecting a sample (40) into a measuring device. The movement direction is a synchronization direction during injection of sample into the measuring device. The target position is a synchronization position during injection of sample into the measuring device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a measuring device comprising a piston pump (2) a method for controlling a piston pump.
