<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means and a method for modulating phosphate metabolism which is especially useful for treatment of bone mineral or renal disease. <P>SOLUTION: Disclosed are a new phosphatonin polypeptide derived from humans, a polynucleotide encoding the phosphatonin, and a vector, host cell, antibody and gene recombinant method for producing the polypeptide and polynucleotide. It is possible to diagnose or treat bone mineral or renal disease by using them.
