PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ergothioneine from mushroom mycelia with an ergothioneine contained higher in the mycelia than in the carpophore. SOLUTION: The method for producing ergothioneine from mushroom mycelia is provided, based on the finding that in Grifola gargal belonging to the genus Grifola and Agaricus blazei Murrill belonging to the genus Agaricus, respective ergothioneine contents of their mycelia are significantly higher than their carpophores, through screening the ergothioneine-producing abilities of various kinds of mushrooms.
