PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To selectively combine areas to perform printing without reducing printing speed more than necessary and to reduce limitations on the formation of a printing layout. SOLUTION: The portable printer has a head control circuit 19 that divides a heating element disposed at a thermal head 1 into a plurality of strobe areas and can apply strobe signals in units of the strobe areas. A CPU 11 sets, through a strobe-area setting process, strobe area information indicating combinations of the strobe areas to which strobe signals are applied at the same time, and stores this information in a flash memory 14. During a printing process, the CPU 11, for each combination of the strobe areas indicated by the strobe area information, applies a strobe signal to the thermal head 1 in a time-sharing manner by means of the head control circuit 19 and performs printing.
