PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating an electrodialyser, which can prevent a bipolar membrane of the electrodialyser from being broken and can make the electrodialyser restart its operation without causing any problems, even when the electrodialyser stops its operation for a predetermined period of time after having treated a metal-containing liquid (plating solution and the like) in itself. SOLUTION: The electrodialyser 1 includes a desalting chamber 6 and concentration chambers 7 in between a cathode 2 and an anode 3, which are separated from each other by an anionic exchange membrane 4 and a bipolar membrane 5. The method for operating the electrodialyser 1, which treats a metal-containing liquid by supplying the metal-containing liquid to the desalting chamber 6, includes passing water into the desalting chamber 6 after having stopped supplying the metal-containing liquid to the desalting chamber 6, and stopping the passing of water into the desalting room 6 after a lapse of predetermined period of time.
