SIDE AIRBAG SYSTEM, BACKREST, AND HEADREST

Disclosed is a side airbag system (1) comprising a side airbag (2) for protecting the upper thorax and head region of a vehicle passenger between a lateral vehicle structure (2) and the vehicle passenger, and a gas generator that is fluidically connected to the side airbag (2). The side airbag (2) has a planar design in the unfolded state and protectively covers a head movement path and different sitting positions for short and tall vehicle passengers. In order to increase the potential to protect the head in convertibles and compact vehicles, the side airbag (2) has an outer contour with a substantially circumferential bulge (8) from the perspective of the lateral vehicle structure (3).
