A three set-type Korean alphabet input method and apparatus for a portable terminal are provided to input consonants and vowels at a time when inputting Korean alphabet on a keypad in which a key number is limited, thereby removing the number of pressing key. An input unit has one or more function key and 10 or more character keys. In each character key, a consonant and a vowel is simultaneously arranged one by one. The rest of consonants and vowels are additionally arranged as an upper character which is inputted with the function key in consideration of usage frequency and input convenience. A controller receives a signal generated by pressing the character key independently or with the function key in the input unit. The controller produces a code combining the received signal with a current input order. The controller reads the Korean alphabet corresponding to the code from a character table and displays the Korean alphabet.
