<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film, having property as optically negative C plate, and a large positive distribution of retardation at an angle of 40°. <P>SOLUTION: This retardation film includes a transparent substrate and a retardation layer, which is formed on the transparent substrate, and contains a bar-like compound having refractive index anisotropy and in which the wavelength dependency of retardation at an angle of 40°is of a positive distribution type, wherein the relationship between the refractive indexes nx, ny in optional x and y directions orthogonal to each other in the in-plane direction, and a refractive index nz in the direction of thickness satisfies the expression of nx≥ny>nz, and the transparent substrate shows the optical isotropy in the in-plane direction and in the direction of thickness. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
