<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for controlling an alternator wherein energy can be efficiently recovered through generation by an alternator with alternator braking and driving force control taken into account. <P>SOLUTION: Alternator braking and driving force control is carried out to control alternator braking and driving force, which is generated by an alternator equipped in a vehicle and acts on the vehicle, based on the driving state of the vehicle and an SOC value is computed based on the state of charge of a battery (Step ST202). An SOC correction value B is computed based on alternator braking and driving force Fo (Steps ST203 to ST205). The state of acceleration/deceleration of the vehicle is determined (Step ST206). A target voltage V<SP>*</SP>is set based on the state of acceleration/deceleration and the SOC correction value B (Step ST207).
