A magnetic recording head manufacturing method comprises a step of sequentially laminating a return york (10), a trailing shield layer (12), and a trailing gap layer (13) on a substrate, a step of forming a repeated multilayer film (14) of FeCo and Pd on the trailing gap layer by spattering, a groove forming step of applying a resist onto the repeated multilayer film of FeCo and Pd, performing exposure and development, and thereby forming a groove, a step of forming a magnetic layer (16) composed of a magnetic member the saturation magnetic flux density (Bs value) of which is lower than that of the repeated multilayer film (14) of FeCo and Pd in the groove by plating, and then removing the resist, and a step of removing the repeated multilayer film (14) of FeCo and Pd using the magnetic layer (14) as a mask.
