<p>A semi-transmission type liquid crystal display capable of performing both high-definition reflection display and transmission display while minimizing elevated manufacturing cost in a simple manufacturing process is provided. The semi-transmission type liquid crystal display which is in a vertical orientation mode comprises a liquid crystal cell having a rear polarizer, a pair of substrates, and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the pair of substrates and an observation polarizer whose absorption axis crosses at right angles to the absorption axis of the rear polarizer and performs the transmission display and the reflection display. The transmission display area and the reflection display area have a first retardation layer which satisfies 1.5 = Nz = 9.0, the in-plane slow axis of which crosses at right angles to the absorption axis of the observation polarizer, and which satisfies 20 nm = Re(550) = 80 nm between the liquid crystal layer and the observation polarizer. The transmission display area has a second retardation layer for converting the linearly polarized light entering from the observation polarizer when no voltage is applied into circularly polarized light together with the first retardation layer between the first retardation layer and the observation polarizer.</p> |
