<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light modulator constituted as a single optical element, having reduced number of parts and high reliability, and which is manufactured at a comparatively low cost, using orthogonal polarization synthesis. <P>SOLUTION: This light modulator has a substrate 1 having electro-optical effect, a light waveguide path 2, and modulating electrodes 61, 62. The light waveguide path 2 has an input waveguide path 21, branched waveguide paths 23, 24, 27, 28, and an output waveguide path 30 connecting the branched waveguide paths mutually to guide light waves to the outside of the light modulator. This light modulator is also provided with modulating means 25, 26 including a part of the modulating electrodes arranged therein and modulating the light waves propagated in the branched waveguide paths, a polarized wave face selecting means 4 arranged in a part of the light waveguide path before the connection of the branched waveguide paths to control a polarized wave face for the light wave modulated by the modulating means, and a polarized wave face adjusting means 5 arranged in a part of the light waveguide path before the connection of the branched waveguide paths from the polarized wave face selecting means to adjust the polarized wave faces to cross the polarized wave faces of the light waves propagated in each of branched waveguide paths orthogonally. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT</p> |
