PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting damage of the membrane and a membrane filtration apparatus which allow continuous detection of damage of the membrane with no additional arrangement even when the quality of raw water is clear. SOLUTION: The membrane filtration apparatus 1 detects damage of the membrane by separating the deposit formed, through filtration treatment, on the surface of the membrane module 5 on the raw-water side temporarily from the membrane with reverse-flow water so as to increase the turbidity or the number of fine particles on the raw-water side of the membrane, carrying out a filtration treatment for detection of damage of the membrane by using the membrane module 5 and measuring the quality of the filtrate water after the filtration treatment for the detection by using a water quality gauge 9 to detect damage of the membrane.
