A method for producing magnesium compound represented by formula (I): <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>Mg(OEt)2-n(OMe)n (I)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> where Et is an ethyl group, Me is a methyl group and n is a numerical value of from 0.001 to 1, by reacting metal magnesium, ethanol, methanol and a halogen and/or a halogen-containing compound containing at least gram atom of a halogen atom relative to one gram atom of the metal magnesium. A method of producing a solid catalyst component.
