The method involves determining a mass inertia moment of a workpiece table (12) during starting of a machine tool. The determined moment is stored as a reference value in a data memory of a computer numerical control (CNC) drive controller. The mass inertia moment in a further measuring run is re-determined as consequence of certain preset operating parameters. A position of a sliding element (1) actuating clamping elements (7) is detected. The re-determined moment is compared with the determined moment in consideration of the determined position of the sliding element. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a workpiece pallet or a workpiece on a rotatable tool table of a machine tool.
