The device (10) has a drive (17) for moving base jaws (14, 16) between a grip position and a non-grip position. A camera (34) has a lens (42) with an adjustable lens element (46), where the lens element is adjusted such that a gripping region, in which an article gripped by the gripping device is provided, is focused in the grip position, and a far field is focused in the non-grip region. The drive is coupled with the lens element such that the adjustment of the lens element is made by the drive of the base jaws.
