<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical fastener and surgical stapling device. <P>SOLUTION: The surgical fastener includes a core material having at least a tissue penetrating tip and a coating at least applied on a part of the core. The coating includes a coating to emit a visible light. The surgical stapling device includes a handle, a long narrow tubular member extending in a distal direction from the handle, a cartridge including an illuminated staple that is provided on the distal end of the long narrow tubular member, and a light source.
