PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which does not perform improper patch formation while securing highly accurate toner amount control in view of the printing ratios of a specific area and a specific color, consequently shortens the time required for this control and improves productivity (average printing speed). SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a toner image forming means which continuously forms toner images; a calculation means which calculates the printing ratios of the plurality of specific areas of the toner image; a test image forming means which forms test images corresponding to each specific area; a detection means which detects the density of each test image; a judgment means which judges whether each specific area is a high printing ratio area whose printing ratio reaches a predetermined reference value or a low printing ratio area whose printing ratio does not reach the predetermined reference value; and a control means which controls the toner amount of the toner image forming means, based on the density of the test image corresponding to the specific area judged as the low printing ratio area.
