PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct oxidation fuel cell having excellent power generation performance and durability. SOLUTION: A membrane-electrode assembly for the direct oxidation fuel cell includes an electrolyte membrane 2, an anode and a cathode 4. The anode is joined to one surface of the electrolyte membrane 2 and the cathode 4 is joined to the other surface. The cathode 4 includes a catalyst layer 10 in contact with the electrolyte membrane 2 and a diffusion layer 11 formed on the catalyst layer 10, and the catalyst layer 10 contains a volume of pores 31 corresponding to 2 to 20% of the total volume between the electrolyte membrane 2 and the diffusion layer 11.
