摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an adverse influence of wrong detection of a document edge on postprocessing using a detection result with respect to an image reader. SOLUTION: This image reader pre-scans a partial area on a document table to read a lower area of a document placed on the document table, converts image data as a read result into edge image data, and extracts an edge point group corresponding to document edges from the data. Further, the extracted edge point group is linearly approximated to estimate a document area of the edge image data. Then the distance D1 from a data left end to the left side of the document and the distance D2 from a data lower end to the lower side of the document area are calculated (S910, S930), and when the distances D1 and D2 are both less than a threshold, it is evaluated that the accuracy of the estimated document area is high (S950), but when not, it is estimated that the accuracy is low (S980).
