A method for Instant Message (IM) delivery status notification includes that: the calling party submits an IM message carrying an IM identifier, and the IM message is translated to Short Message Service (SMS) message which is then forwarded to the SMS Service Center (SMS-SC); the corresponding relationship between the IM identifier and the SMS identifier corresponding to the SMS message is established; the SMS status report carrying the SMS identifier submitted by the SMS-SC is received,and then an IM delivery status notification which includes the IM identifier is created and submitted to the calling party after the IM identifier is retrieved based on the corresponding relationship. The calling party can be informed whether the IM message has been received by the called party by adopting the technical solution of the present invention.
