[Class 78 (i)] A convey iug device for articles such as biscuits comprises a woven mesh endless band adapted for travel in an arcuate conveying path and connected to flexible elongated driving means such as a chain or chains. In Figs. 1 and 5 the band comprises a series of helically crimped wires 23 tapering from end to end, and loosely interwoven to form an annulus which is folded diametrically and disposed between concentric semicircular frames 2 and 3 to form an upper semicircular conveying run and a lower return run. Chains 11 and 18 attached to the two edges of the band are supported by rails carried by the frames 2, 3. Coiled springs 24 threaded through the mesh of the band resist buckling. At each fold the band passes round a driving shaft 7 having sprockets 17 and 18 of different diameter for driving the chains at appropriate speeds, and intermediate nosing rollers 6 of the same diameter as the inner and smaller sprocket. As the band passes over the nosings it travels at the same speed throughout its width and can therefore be synchronized with straight end-on feeding and receiving conveyers. In the case of a conveyer having a smaller arc than 180‹, the band would be formed as a truncated cone instead of an annulus. The ends of the conveyer in Fig. 1 may be extended into straight runs, at the ends of which it is doubled over nosings, to form a U-shaped sorting or packing conveyer. An L-shaped conveyer would be formed in a similar manner. In Fig. 10 is shown a form of band of particular application to a sorting table having two parallel straight runs joined by semicircular end runs. The interwoven crimped and flattened rods are of equal width throughout their length, and where, as shown, the driving hain 28 is attached to the middle of the rods. lie outer edge of the band is extended and the inner edge contracted when travelling in a curved path. The driving chain may, alternatively, be attached to the band at the inner or outer side in which cases the band would be extended at its outer side or contracted at its inner side only at the curves. The band is attached to pintles 29 of the chain 28 through the intermediary of plates 30, but rods may be threaded through the band and attached to the plates. |
