<p>The device has a liftable and lowerable undercarriage for operation on rails (8). A traction system of the undercarriage has an electric motor (1) arranged inside a telescopic axle tube (2) of an undercarriage axle (7). The electric motor has a cooling jacket and drives rail wheels (5) that are connected with the axle tube. The traction system has a central electrical energy supply unit including an internal combustion engine and a generator.
