The method involves modeling the engine behavior in a partly mathematical way. The model of the engine behavior defines the dependence between output variable and input variable by mathematical formula. A part of the output variable is determined by evaluation of the formula. The physical activity which influences the engine is modeled. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an arrangement for controlling engines; (2) a computer program; and (3) a computer readable storage medium on which a program is stored.
