507,034. Apparatus for finishing boxes. MULLER, J. C. Oct. 4, 1938, No. 28778. Convention date, March 18. [Class 18] Boxes with hinged lids are thrust intermittently along a table with their lids open, the lid of one box is swung up out of the plane of the table and, whilst in this position, pressure is exerted on the outside of the lid walls to bend them inwards slightly to facilitate the subsequent closing down of the lid. The table comprises rails 13, 14 with guides 16 ... 18 for the bodies of the boxes, and the lid of the box being operated on rests on a pivoted plate 19 which is tilted by a forked lever 21 straddling the main driving shaft 23 and carrying a roller resting on a cam plate on that shaft. The front flange of the lid is pressed in by a curved pad 9 on a pivoted lever 47 which carries a roller resting against a cam plate on the shaft 23. Two other pivoted levers 27, 34 are actuated by cam plates on this shaft and act in the following sequence. Both levers are lowered and lever 34 alone is then raised so that a wedge 33 carried thereby is withdrawn from between spring-pressed arms 11, 12 pivoted on a cross-shaft 26 on lever 27 to allow the lower ends of the arms to press together the walls of the body and lid which are hinged together. As the lever 34 rises, hooks 45 thereon engage the upper ends of pivoted levers 8 connected to the shaft 26, and the lower ends of these levers press inwardly against the side walls of the lid against the action of springs 42. The presser pads attached to lever 8, 47 have curved contacting surfaces. |
