The method involves determining the difference of the pressure at terminals of a catalytic converter of an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine (10), using a determining unit for deducing the diagnosis of the functional state of the catalytic converter. The pressure in the upstream and the pressure in the downstream of the catalytic converter are measured. A value of the difference of the pressure at the terminals of the catalytic converter is compared with a threshold value using a comparing unit of an electronic control unit (26). An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a functional state of a catalytic converter of an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine.
