PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-quality precursor fiber for carbon fibers, which has little formation of fuzz by using a PAN-based polymer solution capable of increasing spinning rate and enhancing spinning draft, and to provide a method which enables the stable production of a high-performance and high-quality carbon fibers even in a sintering step by using the high-quality precursor fiber for carbon fibers. SOLUTION: The method for producing the precursor fiber for carbon fibers includes spinning a polymer solution obtained by dissolving a polyacrylonitrile-based polymer in a solvent while setting a spinning draft of the polymer solution to the range of 8-100 to provide a solidified yarn having a single fiber fineness of dried solidified yarn of 0.4-2.3 dtex and drawing the solidified yarn to provide a drawn yarn having a single fiber fineness of 0.4-1.2 dtex, when carrying out dry-wet spinning of the polymer solution.
